Understanding mass assembly during the formation of stars and galaxies requires observations across all spatial scales. Spectroscopic studies, for instance, can reveal gas kinematics and trace the flow of material from large scales down to the smaller scales probed by single-dish telescopes and interferometers, respectively.
Furthermore, single-dish telescopes enable unbiased surveys of large areas of the sky or of extensive samples of objects. Their measurements provide integrated properties of galaxies and star-forming regions, preparing the selection of representative subsamples for subsequent high-angular-resolution interferometric follow-up observations.
In addition, single-dish telescopes serve as platforms for the development of new, state-of-the-art instrumentation, allowing the testing and optimization of prototypes with significantly faster turnaround times before deployment on interferometers.
In this spirit, this workshop will build on the 2023 APEX telescope workshop in Chile to expand the scope to the synergies with ALMA, other submillimeter observatories such as CCAT, as well as potential synergies with optical spectroscopic surveys. A main aim of the workshop is to reach out to the astronomical community in Chile to discuss benefits of preparatory APEX projects and subsequent synergies with ALMA and other observations.
The three day workshop will cover information about the telescope, their science and instrumentation, and will offer a platform for discussion of ongoing and future related projects. It will take place from 16 to 18 November 2026, at Cerro Calán in Santiago.
